Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be formerly incarcerated to be eligible?

No, you are not required to have served time in a youth facility, jail or prison. However, the goal of this fellowship is to develop the skills of individuals with justice involvement and build on past experiences to drive transformative change in the justice system. Some level of justice involvement is required, whether this includes you, a family member or dear loved one.

Can I save and resume my application at a later time?

No, you must complete and submit the online application form all at once. However, you can view the entire application and prepare the required materials before submitting. We recommend that you write your responses on another platform and then copy/paste into the form for submission.

I want to apply, but I don’t think my writing is a good representation of myself and my work. What can I do?

We encourage applicants with various strengths to apply. We want to hear from you regardless of your writing abilities and we can find other ways to get to know you! The application includes an opportunity to supplement your written responses with media links. This could be an article or video that highlights your community involvement, or it could be something you create specifically for the application (ex: a video introduction of yourself).

If you require additional accommodations, please contact us by email or phone, listed below.

Who should I include as a reference?

We would prefer a professional, wise elder, or academic reference that is not a friend or family member. Examples could include elders, teachers, mentors, volunteer supervisors, managers, or employers. References may be contacted by the NGF team and should be prepared to speak about your candidacy.

Where and when is the fellowship?

We will meet as a cohort multiple times throughout the year and offer opportunities for fellows to stay connected outside of sessions. In the past these have been in person and virtual, keeping in mind Covid-19 restrictions. We will follow up with information on the 2023 cohort sessions as they become available. Any necessary travel and support to attend sessions will be taken care of by the fellowship.

How many fellows will be accepted into this program?

A maximum of 15 applicants will be selected.
