SAN FRANCISCO – July 29, 2019 – A new fact sheet from CJCJ Senior Research Fellow Mike Males finds declines in San Francisco’s violent youth crimes over the past ten years.
The fact sheet finds:
- An unprecedented decline in San Francisco youth crime over the past decade has resulted in a concurrent decline in the county’s juvenile hall population.
- Violent youth crimes fell by 64 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department juvenile hall bookings for violent crimes.
- Of the 23 homicides reported in San Francisco this year, one victim was under age 18, seven were ages 18 – 39, nine were ages 40 and older, and the remainder was not specified.
