NGF 2024 cohort at Sol Collective in Sacramento, CA
Next Generation Fellowship 2024
Our Next Generation Fellowship (NGF) met this April to kick off our 7th cohort. NGF is a leadership development and policy advocacy fellowship for formerly incarcerated and system impacted leaders throughout California. In NGF, emerging leaders engage in culturally-relevant dialogues and activities in order to foster effective storytelling, civic participation, and strategic advocacy. Through NGF, fellows are encouraged to recognize their lived experience as a form of expertise that can influence policy-making and strengthen justice reform. NGF brings together a community of advocates and mentors to support fellows and facilitate future leadership opportunities.
NGF’s first of three sessions took place in Sacramento, California where we focused on building relationships with each other and going to the state capitol to meet with legislators. Historically legislation has been used to oppress and punish disenfranchised communities; it is our intention with NGF to build people power within our fellows so that they may harness that power in their communities to advance change for our shared futures. Past NGF fellows have gone on to help sponsor legislation, start their own programs and arts projects, and more, all for the betterment of their community. We are so inspired by our NGF cohort this year! We look forward to continuing to share on their fellowship and to support them as they work to build better futures and communities for us all. Below you will find some photos of our days together. Stay tuned for more information about our fellows and info on our next sessions.
CJCJ and MILPA (Motivating Individual Leadership for Public Advancement) co-facilitate the fellowship. Together we meet the diverse needs of formerly incarcerated and justice-involved individuals by creating a unique leadership pathway in the movement to end mass incarceration. NGF prioritizes racial equity, cultural healing, and building the people power necessary to end the carceral system’s harm.
