The CJCJ staff are deeply saddened by the recent passing of former San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan. Terence was a long-time CJCJ friend who championed progressive criminal justice reform during his tenure as DA and during his years as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
When he was first elected DA at the height of California’s prison boom he quickly established himself as America’s most progressive district attorney. By championing incarceration alternatives and initiating new diversion and treatment programs, he never wavered from his commitment to social justice and his desire to challenge the prevailing conservative orthodoxy of prosecutors.
Terence was a true pioneer who blazed the path for a new generation of progressive prosecutors. Thank you, Terence, for your commitment, courage, and leadership.
